The Healing Essence NewsletterAutumn Edition 2006What is wrong with ‘preventive care’?Why in our modern western society do we feel like we are being conned by the Doctor when he tries to sell us some preventive care? I am often amazed at how clients will refused to take the minerals and vitamins that they have paid for and have been told will help improve their health. I have heard all the excuses and in many different forms. The most common is that we should be getting our vitamins and minerals from our food. Yeah right. If the soil has all the vitamins and minerals we need then why do farmers have to supply salt licks and vitamins to farm animals? The truth is that our soil has been depleted over many decades of poor farming methods. Only food that has been organically grown can be trusted to contain the nutrients we need. Also our bodies are now being subjected to thousands of chemicals that were not even invented in our Grandparents time. There are well over 80,000 chemicals in our environment with 1000 new chemicals being created each year in the USA. So what is it about preventative care that we have so much trouble with? Do we have to be sick, tired, in pain, or feeling lousy before we look for help? In ancient China the people paid the local healer to keep them well. If they got sick the healer didn’t get paid. So it placed a whole different focus on healing. The healer looked for ways of keeping people well and healthly, he looked for the early signs of sickness so he could prevent the illness occurring. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see what our local doctors would do if they only got paid while we stayed well. In Medicine we are seeing two paths emerging that are directly opposed. The first is the sickness industry that deals with getting you to take medicines to prevent symptoms. It seems in the USA that the pharmaceutical companies have been taken over by the big superannuation funds, whose job it is to make profit for their investors. So if someone came in and said ‘I have a cure for a major disease - you take once and you are cured!’ and then another person comes in and says ‘I have a pill that prevents the symptoms of that major disease, but you have to take the pill everyday for the rest of your life.’ Where do you think the investors are going to place their money? The Sickness industry is based on using medicine to make large sums of money after the illness has occurred. In the sickness industry there is little talk of how to prevent an illness. Vaccinations are developed but there is still much controversy on what the vaccination may be doing in the long term on the (often infants) immune system. Paul Zane Pilzer, a USA economist, talks about how the USA medical industry is worth 1.4 trillion dollars a year and that it has become trapped in the process of making profits, more than finding cures. Pilzer has based his research into the medical industry through economics but it is amazing how he has been able to pinpoint the problem areas of medicine. Pilzer says, ‘Although the ‘ethical’ pharmaceutical companies around the world justify the very high prices of their drugs with the high cost of research and development, drug companies actually spend much more money marketing their drugs than they do on research and development.’ Pilzer is famous for pointing out how the baby boomers have created another industry that he believes will turn over a trillion dollars a year in the USA by 2010. This second industry is called The Wellness Industry - Pilzer describes this industry as “Products and Services provided proactively to healthy people (those without an existing disease) to either make them feel even healthier, look better, slow down the effects of ageing & to prevent disease from developing in the first place.” It seems the baby boomers as they hit 50 years of age are creating all types of new products and careers. Everything from natural therapies to health foods, minerals, vitamins, organic foods, gyms, extreme sports, day spas, personal trainers, life style coaches, and the like, are all being created for the purpose of helping us hold on to the one thing that we value the most - our health and vitality. In other words people are beginning to get the importance of preventative care and they are willing to back it up with their time and money. Being healthly, vital and fit for as long as we can, has become a whole new industry. This new Wellness industry will continue to grow and develop. In the USA now there are 10,000 people per day turning 50. As these people approach retirement age, the US government will have to find $70 million a month for health care and $70 million a month for aged pensioners. No-one is quite sure what that will do to the economy. We are starting to see it in our country with the strain on medicare, public hospitals and superannuation funds. Staying youthful and as fit as you can for as long as you can means a happier and healthier future. The less we need to rely on the sickness industry, the better our lives will be. Preventative care is becoming the most important action we can take for a happier & healthier lifestyle. In good health Robert Kendall
