Emotional level and how it effects your body

Some basic points

In our busy, chaotic society we are fast losing the ability to deeply and peacefully relax. Why is this important you may ask? Often people think to relax is to be doing something that they like, such as read a good book, see a movie or go for a walk.

When I talk about relaxation I am addressing it to the Mind as well as the physical body. Both Mind and Body need rest, quiet, peace. This can also be called process time.

The answer to why must we spend the time relaxing lies in our nervous system and brain.
Have you even noticed how quickly a dog or cat can relax after they have been in a fight. One minute they are fighting, fur up, claws out, teeth bared and growling. And after the fight, within 5 minutes they can go and lie on their mat and completely relax.

The secret lies in their brains because at a conscious level, animals live in the ‘now’, in the present moment. They don’t carry the incident in their conscious mind. They aren’t sitting in the corner thinking of revenge or how they hate the other animal. Their nervous system isn’t carrying the anger or fear associated with the event.

We humans are more ‘intelligent’. We have better memories, a larger brain that can process and store vast amounts of information. Our stress depends on how much we live in the past or future in other words how much emotional energy we carry.

The Brain has been taught to always look out for the dangers that might be around.

Have you ever asked your self why you read the newspapers or have to listen to the news every hour? Because in your RNA/DNA there are thousands of generations that have learnt to protect life through avoiding danger

We all have heard of the ‘fight or flight’ response that is controlled in our bodies by our hormones and nervous system. Fight or flight was an early development in primitive humans. We learned that to survive, our bodies have to be able to run or fight.

There are plenty of books and articles written on what happens to your body in ‘fight or flight’.

Below are listed some of the most powerful actions:-
- Heart beat increases

- Breathing speeds up
- Adrenaline and other hormone secretions increased
- Blood thickens in case of bleeding

- Digestion shuts down and blood is sent to the muscle for quick response
- Nervous system becomes excited, hyper-aware, ready to move.

Now all these things are important to our survival, the problem however, is that if we don’t acknowledge and register that the danger or problem has now passed, the body will continue to be on alert. That means that our breath and heart will always be accelerated and our digestion will continue to be shut down. Our muscles will be holding a certain amount of tension and our hormonal glands will start to become exhausted.

In fact eventually we will just run out of steam. We will always feel tired. The littlest problems will exhaust us. If this continues to happen year in, year out, then the system will begin to break down and dis-ease will occur.

Healing of the body happens 10 times faster if the Body/Mind is relaxed.

So how does our physical body know when to go into fight or flight and when to relax?
Why doesn’t it relax like the cat and dog? Well to understand that, we need to look at our brains and nervous system.

The first thing to realise is that we have 3 brains and 2 halves so you could say that you have at least 4 different ways of experiencing life going on outside of you all the time. We are back to the jigsaw image again.

Remember I said in our other lessons the greater you feel separate from the outside world, then the greater fragmentation inside your brain is occurring. No need to panic. Researchers have proven that we are only using between 1 to 5% of our brains capacity. So we have a lot to reconnect.
