Finding the Master Map to mountains of Happiness and Success

by Robert Kendall

The Law of the Opposites and The Law of Change.

- We live in a world of polarities

Just before the Buddha reached Enlightenment he heard a music teacher telling his student how to play the lute. The teacher said,"if you tighten the sting to tight, the string will break and if you have the string to lose it will not play"

In this moment the Buddha recognised the path to enlightenment was through the middle way.

Now there is one more thing you must learn about your brain to begin to create happiness and success in your life, it's called the Law of the Opposites.

When I was younger one of the first books I read was called the ‘Power of Positive Thinking’ by Norman Vincent Peal, a great book. It excited me and I began saying my positive affirmations every day in every way.  I was driving a taxi at the time and I must admit it was the worst job I ever had.  I didn't make much money and some of the people who came in to my cab; well they were just plain bad and mean.  It showed me the darker side of humanity.  And it opened my eyes to how people's thoughts create their world.

I would have happy, smiling, loving couples and dark, angry, sad couples.  Each day I could feel the pain that went through our society and I could feel the happiness and joy that also was present in humanity.

I decide that my life was going to improve, so every day I would write out positive statements on cards and I would have those cards on the dashboard of the cab.  So while I was driving I'd be saying, " I'm rich, well and happy and every phase of my life is in divine order now."  I tried really hard to stay positive, but you know what, it didn't work.  Well not in the way I expected.

About every two weeks I would break down and cry. I would end up crying in the shower or lying on my bed wondering why God was punishing me.  What had I done that was so bad?  I would get over my tears and resolved that I was going to try even harder, it must be my fault that I was not doing it right or maybe I wasn't working hard enough at it  And two weeks later I would again end up crying, beaten down by my negative thoughts.

It was over a year before I was able to work out what was happening. Coming home from England overland, on a hippy bus, London to Delhi for 39 pounds, but that is another story.  I met a Zen Buddhist.  What I heard from this man was The Law of the Opposites, the philosophy of yin and yang.  The law that states ‘everything in the universe, this third dimensional universe that we now live in, has its opposites.’

The Chinese philosophy of Taoism and Japanese Zen Buddhism are built on this principle.  In the Law of the Opposites everything in the universe has its opposite. Yes/no, night/day, up/down, good/bad, left/right, forward/back, black/white.

For us to live in this world we must have opposites. What would happen if you only turned to the right all the time? that's right; you would go in a circle.  You walk straight by stepping left and right by your body turning on muscles and turning off muscles on opposite sides of your body allows you to go in a straight line.

There is a great secret imbedded in what I just said. Will I tell you? Are you ready to carry the boiling cauldron through the invisible door?  The secret is that you walk a straight line through life by failing as much as you succeed.  Your body in walking has to constantly make mistakes to realize where it is, it has to constantly use its senses, to keep adjusting itself in relationship to where you are going.

A simple example is a guidance system on a rocket.  As a rocket moves off course, it fails to stay on a straight course, caused by many factors, wind, altitude, magnetic settings, fuel load etc...  The rocket has to readjust and come back on course, but that often causes it to fail again as it swings too far in the opposite direction.  So it is an illusion to think it is going in a straight line it is constantly swinging backwards and forwards, constantly failing and constantly succeeding.  Our brain, body and nervous system are constantly doing the same thing.  Imagine what would happen if you breathed in all the time?  You must fail to hold all that air in so that you can breathe out.

“So what is your point Rob" well it is to say, ‘its okay to fail as long as you readjust to succeed.’  Our lives are built on our failures as well as our successes. That we need to fail at all levels to readjust ourselves to find the success.  The failure isn't a problem.  It's only our judgment on failing that is wrong.  Failure is as natural as breathing in and breathing out.  That also means success is as natural as breathing in and breathing out.

Okay, back to the Law of the opposites. Everything in the universe has its opposite.  The body is full of contradictions.  We have a nervous system that takes messages down through our body.  And we have a nervous system that brings messages back up to our brain.  We have a blood supply that is pumped out by the heart, and also a blood supply that brings blood back to the heart.  The heart itself beats and rests.  We eat and we expel, and in our brains out thoughts are made up of electricity, that is caused by two chemicals, sodium and potassium.  They create a negative/positive charge.

My point is that we live in this third dimension by constantly using the laws of the opposites.  At a mental level this has a great deal to do with how we think.  Now, I said that I was doing my best to be positive and I was having these breakdowns, some people liked to call them nervous breakthroughs.  Anyway, what was happening to me was the law of the opposites.  I was trying to stay on one side and the harder I tried, the more power I gave my negatives. And boom, I would be swamped by my negative emotions so that the universal forces of my body/mind would regain balance.

This is fundamental to helping anyone who is trying to doing their best to be positive.  Expect the swings they are natural.  So many people who are doing their best to change and improve, experience these negative swings and they think that they are somehow wrong.  Nothing is further from the truth.  If you are having these emotional swings, good.  You're at least endeavoring to change and that in itself is already a success.  We just have to make some fine adjustments to your thinking so that you can really start to move ahead.

The 1st adjustment is that you need to understand the Law of the Opposites and how it works in your brain.  Your brain is like a computer; no I should say your computer is like your brain.  When you ask your computer a question, it has to quickly scan all of its information to find what you're looking for.  In coded terms it compares the code you put in with all the code it has, looking for a match.  The same happens with your brain, the only way you know what beauty is by comparing it with what you have decided is ugly.

There is a Zen poem that says "when you think of beauty, ugliness has already arrived." So the harder you try to be happy the more you have to think about sadness. It is how your brain determines what happiness feels, looks, sounds, smells and tastes like.

So to think about your positives you have to reflect on the negatives.  You do it at a subconscious level, at the speed of thought.

So what is the answer?  I can hear you say.  Well the answer is embedded in the Yin/Yang sign that is the visual symbols of the Law of the Opposites.

Do you know, the symbol you see it on the back of trucks, surfboards and in any Chinese martial arts center.  It is a circle with a large S draw through the center with small circles within each bend of the S.  One side is usually a dark color, and the other side is a light color.

yin yang sign

The secret of handling our negative and positive lives, is staring us in the face of the Yin/Yang symbol. Yin and Yang are surrounded or should I say embraced by a circle.  In fact the whole symbol is really a ball, constantly moving, changing and revolving.

To handle your negatives you have to embrace your positives, to develop your positives you have to accept your negatives.  The secret of finding happiness and peace is to see that they are really only 2 halves of a whole, they are one, joined.

The circle embraces our negatives and positives.  The circle, the ball contains all of life as we know it within itself.  It is life; life exists because of the polarity.  No matter how hard we try we could not escape the Law of the Opposites.  Life, the beat of our hearts, the thoughts of our minds, must have the impulses of negative and positive.

“Well that's just great Rob, what do I do about changing, what do I do about making my life happier, better, more successful?  If I'm going to always be struggling against my negatives how do I improve? How do I lift my life into a better more joyful realm? I hear you ask.

Well, just don't give up, all is not lost.  We know in life there are successful, happy, loving, rich people and we also know there are poor, sad, sick and unloved people.  So what makes the difference?

The Law Of Change

The difference lies in how we view our negative and positive selves.  The Law of the Opposites is connected to The Law of Change.

For one thing we know for sure is that the only thing that doesn't change in the universe is that everything changes.  That everything will change.  We are born young, supple, flexible, and we die old, stiff and dried out.

The Laws of Nature and of the seasons will dictate what our bodies will go through as we change with age. We are born, we grow up and eventually we die. I like the adage, “live each day as if it is your last because one day it will be”.

Change is inevitable. So how do I succeed? Well it all comes down to how you choose to look at it, deal with it and speak about it. Change can be seen as a threat or an opportunity. As an example, girlfriend leaves one guy and he is devastated, she leaves another guy and he goes out and gets another girl. Same change, same problem.  What was different?  Yes, how each guy saw the change, how they choose to deal with it.

If you see the changes that come into your life as a threat, you’ll go on the defensive.  The guy who is devastated might think “Well that's it for me.  I'm not ever going out with another girl again.  I going to stay home, watch TV, drink beer and get really fat so that no one will come near me."  He is building defense after defense around his pain. We call this a maintenance cycle. Threat leads to defense, which leads to maintaining the same old patterns.

Now let us talk about the other guy. Girl leaves and he sees it as an opportunity. “ Great, best thing that ever happened to me. I didn’t really like her any way” His change is an opportunity; it becomes a chance to be creative. Instead of going on the defense he starts to get creative and sees it as a change that can give him a better life. We call this a growth cycle.

So to sum it all up.
Yes you create your own reality by how you see, hear, touch, taste and smell.

Your choices dictate the world you experience. The joy that this can bring is that the choices you make, give you all the power you need to create a better, happier, more successful life, anytime anywhere.

Bring your power to make choices back home, you decide how you are going to feel about everything that happens to you..
Stop handing your happiness, health, and success over to the outside world to tell you how to be, what to think and how to feel.

Trust your emotions to give you feedback. Negative feelings say No and positive feelings say YES
Embraced the fact that you create your own reality.
Embraced the fact that choice produces results.
Embrace the fact that failure is a natural part of success.
Embrace the fact that the Law of the Opposites and the Law of Change, constantly gives you opportunities to succeed.

And finally
Embrace the fact that practicing the power of choosing success in the face of failure is the only way you will be able to create a life which holds all the happiness, blessings and love that you could ever desire to have.

Meditation Classes

Our classes where started because we observed that many of our new clients where suffering from busy minds coming from busy lives filled with stress. It seems people have lost or never taken the time to practice the true art of "being peaceful", or of just taking the time each day to rest and recharge or re-create. Everyone of us needs some loving kindness, time to sit and feel who we are. Each of us need time to forgive ,let go and love who we truly are, i.e. Divine beings having and earthy experience not the other way around. Our body/minds need a time each day to process all that we do, the mind and nervous system needs to be given a chance to let go and relax. We all need time to just be. Remember we are called human beings not human doings.

Just before the Buddha reached Enlightenment he heard a music teacher telling his student how to play the lute.

The teacher said,"if you tighten the sting to tight, the string will break and if you have the string to lose it will not play"
